National Indigenous History Month:
“In 2009, the House of Commons unanimously passed a law designating June as National Aboriginal History Month, in recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ contributions to the building of Canada and the strength of our nation’s Indigenous communities. This month is a time for all Canadians – Indigenous, non-Indigenous and newcomers – to reflect upon and learn the history, sacrifices, cultures, contributions, and strength of First Nations, Inuit and Metis people. It’s important to keep in mind that First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples each have their own unique histories. And within each group, there are distinct histories…. For many Canadians, the history of Indigenous Peoples and Canada was, until recently, unknown. Generations of Canadians have gone through their lives without knowing about residential schools, the historic and ongoing impacts of the Indian Act, the significance of treaties, or the contributions of Indigenous Peoples to the mosaic of Canada. Non-Indigenous Canadians need to learn about Indigenous history because by doing so they demonstrate their recognition of the important role of Indigenous Peoples in shaping this country historically and their contributions to protecting democracy.” (source)

Pride Month:
Bluevale is proud to be flying the Pride flag for the month of June to celebrate Pride Month! Many of our students, staff, parents/guardians and community members identify as members of the Rainbow or LGBTQ+ community. Flying the Pride flag not only signals that our schools are safe spaces for everyone, it also aligns with our Operational Goal of student and staff well-being and our new Strategic Priority that staff are supported in their wellness and students experience a sense of belonging in a caring learning environment that addresses their well-being. Our school district is showing our acceptance of the LGBTQ community during Pride month by raising the Pride flag. This Video gives a brief history of Pride month and events throughout the United States and Canada that have contributed to the movement and celebration of the rights and freedoms of our LGBTQ communities.
